Genealogy of Cheshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire families
Annie Holland, born in 1908, the daughter of Timber Merchant Henry Holland disliked her baptismal name and preferred to be called ‘Nancy’. She developed her administrative and clerical skills in her father’s office in Market Drayton. She met Harold Lindop when he was buying timber from the firm and they married in 1936. In the 1950’s she became interested in tracing the ancestors of Harold’s grandmother, Sarah Read who it was thought was descended from the Reades of Blackwood Hill, near Horton,
She was a founder member of the South Cheshire Family History Society, which met regularly in her house in Woore. She built up an impressive library of parish registers, trade directories and local history books which enabled her to help many of her friends in their own family history research. Consequently she left a legacy of hand written notes on genealogical notes spanning many families. She supplemented her research with visits to record offices, libraries and churchyards and in doing so has acquired information that is not currently online by the major internet-based companies and organisations.
Nancy’s son, Geoffrey, began his career as a broadcast engineer working for BBC-TV and Border Television before becoming a freelance writer specialising in astronomy and astronautics. He later moved into marketing.
On inheriting his mother’s research notes he set up his publishing company - Mercianotes - in order to bring her work to a wider public
